The Ritual of Lighting a Candle at Dusk

There’s a certain moment each evening where the house begins to shift.

Daylight softens. The kitchen quietens. Shadows begin gathering in the corners of the room while lamps and candlelight slowly take their place.

It’s usually around this time that I begin lighting candles throughout the house.

One beside the kitchen while dinner is being prepared. Another near the bath at the end of the day. Sometimes one quietly flickering beside a stack of books in the lounge while the evening settles in around us.

Over time, I’ve realised it’s never really been about the candle itself.

It’s about what candlelight does to a home.

The atmosphere instantly changes. The lighting softens. Everything feels a little calmer, slower and more grounded.

I think that’s why I’m always naturally drawn towards candlelight during the colder months. Winter evenings invite us inward in a way summer never quite does.

We cook slower meals. We stay home more. We gather around warm drinks, layered blankets and quieter routines.

And somehow, the simple act of lighting a candle becomes part of the rhythm of the evening itself.

A quiet evening ritual

A small ritual that gently signals the day beginning to slow down.

At home lately, I’ve found myself reaching for deeper, warmer fragrances in the evenings, soft woods, smoke, vanilla, cedar and grounding earthy notes that make a room feel instantly comforting and lived in.

Fragrance has such a quiet ability to shape how a home feels. Certain scents instantly create warmth. Others feel fresh and uplifting. Some become tied to seasons, memories and moments we return to again and again.

That’s something I think about often while creating fragrances for Crafty Chook.

Not simply how a candle smells when first opened, but how it feels once lit within a home at the end of the day.

The soft flicker beside the bath. Warm light reflecting across the kitchen bench. A candle glowing quietly while the rest of the house winds down for the evening.

Those are the moments I’m always trying to create.

Because sometimes the smallest rituals are the ones that make a home feel most comforting.
