A few simple rituals to help your candle burn beautifully

There is something lovely about lighting a candle — that small moment when the fragrance begins to fill the room and home feels just a little warmer.

A little candle care will help your Crafty Chook candle burn cleanly, evenly and beautifully from the first light to the last.

Trim your wick

Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately 5–6mm.

A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a steady flame and prevents the wick becoming too long or developing excessive carbon build-up.

If you notice a little “mushroom” forming at the top of the wick, trim it away before lighting your candle again.

Make the first burn count

The first burn helps set the foundation for how your candle will continue to burn.

Allow enough time for the melted wax pool to reach, or come close to, the edges of the vessel before extinguishing your candle. This helps encourage an even burn and reduces tunnelling. Depending on the size of your candle, this will generally take a couple of hours.

Find the right place

Where you place your candle matters. Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface away from open windows, fans and strong draughts. Moving air can cause the flame to flicker and the candle to burn unevenly. And, of course, always keep burning candles away from children, pets and anything flammable.

Don't burn for too long

We recommend enjoying your candle for no more than four hours at a time.

Long burns can make the wick and vessel excessively hot and may affect how your candle performs. When it's time to extinguish your candle, allow it to cool completely before trimming the wick ready for next time.

A little care goes a long way

Candle care doesn't need to be complicated.

Trim the wick. Give the first burn time. Keep it away from draughts. Don't leave it burning unattended. Then simply enjoy it.

Because sometimes lighting a candle isn't really about the candle at all. It's about slowing down for a moment, changing the atmosphere of a room and making home feel exactly where you want to be.
